I really don’t know much about weather, but this sounds serious. We are supposed to get with an “atmospheric river” this weekend, which is supposed to dump rain on us and snow in the Sierras, with flood warnings in effect. I always pray for rain, but I guess I better get that sump pump in my back yard working before this hits.

I have never experienced rain like I have living in Sacramento, 6 inches in two days? No big deal, just be careful to not drive on the flooded freeway underpasses.

“Atmospheric River” is just a term about a long line of upper level moisture over the Pacific and moving over land. It is common with this climactic setup.

In the end, all that matters is you will get rain. And lots of it. Which with the drought situation in CA is good. Although the application of the rain could slow down a bit... Flooding will be a big issue.

We get these in the PNW several times a year. No need for an ark, but maybe a need for the sump pump.

I heard the flood warnings in the mountains are partly because there’s supposed to be warm air immediately following a bunch of snow, so the runoff will be heavy. Our dry-ass ground doesn’t help though, the water just sheets off instead of saturating. I drive by farmland on the way into work, and this morning there were rivers through them from the hills above, we got over 3 inches yesterday and overnight. This weekend should be interesting. Have you guys been hammered already?

A buddy with lives in the Santa Cruz mountains (and also races a certain “zombee” crapcan MGB) said they are supposed to get 15" of rain over the next 3 days ... and they are already saturated. These are the same conditions that caused the gnarly Ben Lomond/Love Creek mudslide that destroyed a bunch of homes and killed a number of people. ::gulp::

It rained constantly for 2 days in a row already here in the Bay Area, finally breaking this morning.

Not looking forward to an even wetter weekend.
